In 2008, the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) gave the name Yucatan habanero. It is considered that the origin, quality and requirements specified in the designation of origin shall be warranted based on the Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM). The decree also determined that the IMPI, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, would process the registration of the appellation "Chile Habanero Yucatan Peninsula" to validate abroad in accordance with international treaties.
