Maallust Brewery is situated in Veenhuizen, Drenthe, almost exactly at the point where three provinces meet: the geographic centre of the Northern Netherlands. It is there that the activities of the Society of Humanitarianism first took place in 1823. These are the colonies that Suzanna Jansen describes in her novel Het Pauperparadijs (The Pauper’s Paradise).
