Starting in September, domestic famous brand products will be gradually required to phase out the use of a state logo marking them as one of China's famous brands, according to a management regulation of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) .

The Chinese Famous Brand Strategy Promotion Committee announced 493 famous brands in 2005, 556 in 2006 and 856 in 2007, and their products will be required to stop using the famous brand label in September 2010, September 2011 and September of 2012, respectively, according to the regulation.

When the expiration is due, enterprises are banned from using the logo of China's famous brands in any way, including packages, ads and introduction books. Those enterprises with an expiration date due in September 2010 are allowed to use the logo until Dec. 31, 2010 if the logo has been printed on the packages or the introduction books.

The AQSIQ held an annual event of China's top brand awards in 2001 and launched the world famous brand selection in 2005, but it stopped the events in 2008.
